Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and most of the organized version in Gary happens before dark. The city holds its event on Friday evening. The Gary Public Library runs two Saturday events, and both are over by midafternoon. The national park's ranger hike in Miller Woods finishes at 3 p.m. As of Oct. 13, the city has posted no residential trick-or-treat hours for Saturday night. That leaves the evening open, and that's worth knowing before anyone buys candy or plans a route.
These events are spread across Gary. Roosevelt Park is on Harrison Street, the Main Library is on West 5th Avenue, and Lake Street in Miller Beach holds both a library branch and an arts center. Here is how the dates and times line up.
Friday, Oct. 30 belongs to Roosevelt Park
The City of Gary's Trunk or Treat runs from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, at the Roosevelt Park Pavilion, 2201 Harrison St. The city lists decorated trunks, candy, food, photos, and giveaways. The city's own 2026 events calendar, last updated in May, already had the event on that Friday at that address under the name "Fall Fest (Trunk or Treat)." So the date has held for months.
The event page also has a sign-up link for anyone who wants to take part. The decorated trunks come from people who sign up, so a block club, church group, or family can register a car and hand out candy instead of collecting it. The city hasn't published a cost for attending.
This is the only city-run Halloween event on the 2026 calendar, and it is the only family event that weekend held after dark. Families with younger children who want the costume-and-flashlight version of the holiday will find it here, one night early.
Saturday, Oct. 31 runs from noon to 3:30
On Halloween itself, the public family events fit inside three and a half hours of daylight. In order:
- Noon to 3 p.m., Trick or Treat @ Woodson Branch. This is at the Carter G. Woodson Branch, 501 S. Lake St., in Miller Beach. It is for pre-K through grade 8, and treats are handed out while supplies last. Costumes are not required.
- 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Fall Fest 2026 @ Main Library. This is at the Main Library, 220 W. 5th Ave. The library's flyer says costumes and treat bags are welcome but not required.
- 1 to 3 p.m., Miller Woods Hike. Indiana Dunes National Park rangers lead this hike from the Paul H. Douglas Center vestibule. The route follows the Paul H. Douglas Trail through a globally rare black oak savanna, past interdunal wetlands and tall dunes, to the Lake Michigan shore. The hike runs every Saturday in October except Oct. 24, so Halloween is the last one of the month.
Woodson's window starts first and ends half an hour before the Main Library's. A family can begin on Lake Street at noon and still reach the downtown festival with time to spare. Woodson and the Douglas Center are both in Miller Beach, so a family with older kids who would rather walk the dunes than collect candy can do both there.
The hike requires a national park pass. The park charges $25 per car for a one-to-seven-day pass, or $45 for an annual pass. You can buy either at the Paul H. Douglas Center or on Recreation.gov. For a cheaper visit to the same trail, the park's fee-free day this month is Tuesday, Oct. 27. The Douglas Center's Super Kids Scavenger Hunt also runs Wednesday through Sunday all October, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It covers the Nature Play Zone, dune-themed artwork, and the Pollinator Trail, so it fits Halloween morning before the library events start.
The park also says its programs can change or be canceled because of weather or staffing. Its October schedule was last updated Sept. 28, so check again that week.
Lake Street carries the lead-up
The Saturday events cluster on Lake Street for a reason. The Woodson Branch at 501 S. Lake St. and the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts at 540 S. Lake St. are on the same stretch in Miller Beach, and that stretch hosts much of what happens over the two weeks before Halloween.
It starts on Saturday, Oct. 17. That day the Miller Beach Arts & Creative District holds Fest in the First, a free street festival from 3 to 8 p.m. based at 540 S. Lake St. The listing promises children's entertainment, music, food, and arts and crafts vendors. The arts district has more at the Gardner Center through the rest of the month:
- Oct. 18, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.: Artist Talk: Ways of Seeing. Free and open to the public.
- Oct. 23, 7 to 10 p.m.: All in Jest Trivia, $10 at the door.
The library adds three children's events to the run-up. Halloween and Fall Story Hour is Oct. 19, from 4 to 5 p.m., at Children's Services. Pumpkin Fun is back on Lake Street at the Woodson Branch on Oct. 22, from 4 to 5 p.m. Halloween Fun, with games and movies, is at Children's Services on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 24 is also the one October Saturday without a Miller Woods hike, so the library is the main family option that afternoon.
Add it up and a Miller Beach family could reach Lake Street on five separate days in October without crossing the neighborhood. The Woodson Branch hosts two of those events.
What the calendar still doesn't say
Some things are still missing. As of Oct. 13, neither gary.gov nor the other sources we checked had posted Gary's citywide trick-or-treat hours for Saturday night. The Halloween hours guide in The Times of Northwest Indiana that comes up in searches says "Halloween is Friday, Oct. 31," so it is from an earlier year and doesn't apply to 2026. If the city posts hours, they will set the evening plan for every block. Until then, the times above are the only confirmed ones.
Costs are also unconfirmed. The city's Trunk or Treat page and the library's Saturday pages don't list a price. The Woodson event gives out treats only while supplies last, which favors families who arrive closer to noon than to 3.
Saturday night does have one listed event, for adults. The Pooch & Cheech $1,000 Halloween Costume Party, put on by Black Diamond Entertainment, is at the Marquette Park Pavilion, 1 N. Grand Blvd., and is restricted to guests 21 and over. Its Eventbrite listing starts the party at 9 p.m. and advertises $20 presale tickets. Check the listing for the end time and final ticket price before you go.
The same pattern carries into December
The library's third-Sunday jazz concert with the Greater Gary American Jazz Association continues at the Main Library on Nov. 15 and Dec. 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. The city holds a Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway at RailCats Stadium, 1 Stadium Plaza, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20. Holiday Fest is at the same stadium on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. The national park's dated October programs end with the month. Its posted schedule offers only ranger programs that schools and groups request for November and December. So Oct. 31 is the last scheduled public Miller Woods hike on the calendar this year.
