July 18 has come and gone. That leaves Saturday, August 1 and Saturday, August 8 as the last two Saturday-night fireworks games of the year, both at One Stadium Plaza.
That's the frame. Everything else in this post hangs off those two dates.
A few things worth knowing before you buy tickets:
- The park is small on purpose. U.S. Steel Yard's listed capacity is 6,139, which means the cheap seats are still close to the field. You do not need to overpay for a good sightline.
- Ticket prices for RailCats games start around $16, with an average around $46 on resale, so a family of four can genuinely do a fireworks night for under a hundred dollars before food.
- The team plays in the American Association of Professional Baseball, an independent league. The Air Show weekend sits in the middle
Between the second fireworks Saturday and Food Truck Friday, the biggest weekend of the Gary summer lands. The Gary Air Show Weekend takes place August 21–23, 2026, with the Drone and Pyro Show on Friday evening followed by the air show on Saturday and Sunday. Aerial acts perform along the south shore at Marquette Park, and admission is free, though parking fees apply for those driving to the event.
The scheduling detail residents actually use: on Saturday and Sunday, gates open at 9 a.m. and the flying performances begin at 11 a.m.; on Friday, August 21, gates open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.. That Friday Drone and Pyro slot is the underrated hour. Most of the show weekend crowd hasn't arrived yet, the beach is still walkable, and you get a pyro program without the Saturday parking crush.
If driving to Marquette isn't the plan, the South Shore Line, GPTC buses, bike parking, and shuttle services all reach the event. Residents on the west side of Gary who dread Grand Boulevard traffic that weekend should file that away.

- Wednesday, September 3. Wind Down Wednesday closes the run. Midweek, free, on Broadway, and it functions as the unofficial end-of-summer marker before the school-year rhythm takes over.
Five events, four of them free, one under a hundred bucks for a family. That is the actual answer to "what is there to do in Gary in August" and it does not require a single trip to Chicago.

Gary's late-summer calendar has been quietly consolidating around two poles: the Steel Yard on the west side of downtown and the Broadway corridor a few blocks north.
