Lake Street's Winter Runs on Market Sundays and Trivia Fridays

Last January, on the first Sunday of the year, vendors sold locally raised meat, produce, microgreens and fresh mushrooms indoors at 540 S. Lake St. The Miller Beach Arts & Creative District's listing for that day named Bennet Farms, Hulitt Homestead, Baby Greens and Bob's Backyard. The market ran from noon to 2 p.m. at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts, the building that also hosts the Miller Community Theater and puts on Fest in the First and the Lake Effekt Mural Fest in warmer months.

That same building carries most of the street's winter. Between now and the end of March, two kinds of nights come back to the Gardner Center every month: an indoor farmers market on a Sunday and a trivia game on a Friday. Both are already on the calendar. With the dates and a few addresses within a block of the center, you can plan the whole off-season in Miller Beach today.

The two repeating dates, posted through March

The Miller Beach Winter Farmers Market runs once a month on a Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. Admission is free and SNAP is accepted. All in Jest Trivia starts at 7 p.m. on one Friday a month in the same building, with a $10 cover at the door.

Month Market Sunday, noon to 2 p.m. Trivia Friday, 7 p.m.
November 2026 Nov. 1, already past Nov. 27
December 2026 Dec. 13 Dec. 18
January 2027 Jan. 3 Jan. 29
February 2027 Feb. 7 Feb. 26
March 2027 Mar. 7 Mar. 19

The December market is the exception. Every other date falls on the first Sunday of the month, but December's is Dec. 13, the second Sunday. Anyone who goes by habit on Dec. 6 will find the room empty. Trivia continues past the end of the table, with one more game listed for April 30, 2027.

What two hours on a Sunday covers

The market's own listing describes local produce, baked goods and handmade treats. Last season's January vendor list leaned toward the foods that keep a winter market going: meat, mushrooms and microgreens. This season's vendors haven't been posted yet, so the farms named from last January are a guide to what the market has carried before, not a promise for Dec. 13. For questions, the market takes email at [email protected] and calls at (219) 885-9114.

The two-hour window matters if you also want to see the gallery. The center lists Sunday gallery hours of 2 to 4 p.m., which start just as the market closes. Tuesday through Saturday the gallery is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it is closed Mondays. Call ahead if you plan to do both on a market Sunday.

Fridays: teams of six and a cash bar

The trivia night belongs to the arts district too, and its listing explains the format plainly:

"Teams of up to 6 people will be tested in General Knowledge, Sports & Games, TV & Movies, Music, and 2 random Mystery Rounds."

The winning team takes a prize, and so does the host's favorite answer of the night. Admission is $10 at the door, and there's a cash bar. The first game of the season is Friday, Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving. If relatives are still in town that weekend, one table of six fits a house's worth of guests.

November packs the most into one building

From the market on Nov. 1 through the end of the month, the center's calendar is fuller than it will be again until spring. The busiest stretch runs Nov. 13 to Nov. 22.

Miller Community Theatre's 2026 fall play, "Hope & Gravity," plays at the Gardner Center at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, Saturday, Nov. 14, Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21. A 2 p.m. matinee follows on Sunday, Nov. 22. Tickets are $20.

In the gallery, Elena Gray and Adam Johnson's "Ways of Seeing" is free to see and closes Nov. 20. That date is also the play's second Friday, so one evening can cover both, as long as you get to the gallery during its hours that afternoon.

The arts district's smaller programs happen across the street at The Annex, 541 S. Lake St. The events calendar lists:

  • Nov. 7, 9:45 a.m. to noon: a Lovingkindness Meditation yoga workshop in the Gardner Center itself
  • Nov. 13, 4 to 7 p.m.: "Introduction to Paper Play: Mini Zines and Origami Books," $10 per session, drop-in, ages 16 and up
  • Nov. 18, 7 to 9 p.m.: Open Studio Figure Drawing
  • Nov. 21, 1 to 5 p.m.: Animation Station, free for ages 6 to 16, with registration recommended

Put together, the weekend of Nov. 20 can be planned almost hour by hour:

  1. Friday afternoon, see "Ways of Seeing" before it closes, then come back at 7:30 p.m. for "Hope & Gravity."
  2. Saturday, kids ages 6 to 16 can spend 1 to 5 p.m. at Animation Station at The Annex. The play runs again that night.
  3. Sunday, the 2 p.m. matinee closes the run.

A block of Lake Street, in winter

The Visit Miller Beach events calendar shows live music at two businesses within a block of it.

Tiny's Coffee Bar, at 555 S. Lake St., has Hutch Acoustics from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, and again on Dec. 9 and Dec. 23. Its "Gratitude w Attitude Verses & Vibes" open mic is Saturday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. At 615 S. Lake St., Estella's Cantina has Mandalyn & Steve from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19. Neither business lists a cover for these nights, and their winter hours aren't posted with the events, so check with them before you head over.

Around the corner, on Miller Avenue rather than Lake Street, 18th Street Brewery at 5725 Miller Ave. runs karaoke every Wednesday starting at 7 p.m., with doors at 4 p.m. Every Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., it hosts a line dancing session called Boots on Lake Street, despite the Miller Avenue address.

So a Friday trivia night or a Sunday market can start somewhere else on the block. Tiny's and Estella's are within walking distance of the center's door.

December, then the steady months

December starts with figure drawing at The Annex on Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. On Friday, Dec. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., a Paper Play session has people make their own 2027 planners. The free Community Yoga series at the arts district, 10 to 11 a.m., has been running since Sept. 27 and wraps up Dec. 20. Put those beside the Dec. 13 market and Dec. 18 trivia, and the center has something going most weeks of the month.

The citywide event that month is outside Miller. The City of Gary's 2026 events calendar lists Holiday Fest for Saturday, Dec. 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. at RailCats Stadium, 1 Stadium Plaza.

After the holidays, the calendars posted so far for January, February and March show the two repeating dates and little else. That makes the market Sundays on Jan. 3, Feb. 7 and Mar. 7 and the trivia Fridays on Jan. 29, Feb. 26 and Mar. 19 the fixed points of Lake Street's coldest months.
